A Quick Talk About Zombies Ate My Neighbors
In the early to mid 90's after getting some money for my birthday, my mom took me to the local KB Toys at the mall to buy a game. When I saw Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I thought it looked awesome and I had heard it was a lot of fun. I bought it for the Super Nintendo. After we got home, I played it for hours and my parents let me stay up late. I can't remember how far I got that first night, but I had a blast with it.
There's a little secret after you turn on the game that's kind of funny. When the LucasArts logo appears, you can hit the L button to hear a person scream or the R button to hear a dog barking.
The opening title screen is awesome and has some creepy music. The game has a cartoon look to it and different types of tunes to fit each level that can easily get stuck in your head.
It's 1 or 2 players and you can choose between 2 characters named Zeke and Julie. There are 48 stages including some bonus levels. Each stage has a different title like a horror movie. The object of the game is to rescue all the neighbors in each stage before any zombies or monsters can get to them.
Sometimes you will need keys to get into certain rooms or areas and there are also skeleton keys that you will need for the skull doors. You can find them in certain places or after defeating a boss.
There are a lot of different enemies and boss fights in the game other than zombies, like werewolves, chainsaw maniacs, evil dolls, aliens, and so many others.
You can collect different items to use as weapons to fight against the monsters, or potions that can do different things like turn you into a beast. You can find items that give you health or an extra life as well.
The gameplay is a lot of fun and its pretty simple to get into, but the further you get it becomes really difficult. If you have a game over at any point in the game, you can put in a password to get back to where you left off, the only thing is you won't have any of the other items you have collected, just the ones you start out with.
My cousin and I would play this game all the time and still have in recent years. We were never able to beat the final boss because it's ridiculously hard and you have to be careful not to use up all your items. Maybe one day I'll give it another try because I would like to say I finally beat Zombies ate My Neighbors.
There is also a sequel called Ghoul Patrol, that I have never gotten a chance to play. I didn't even know about it for years. It's on my list of games that I still want to check out.
If you've never played Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I highly recommend it, especially if your a fan of monsters and retro games.
